unit 4 seance 5 the poundmaker 

Pitikwahanapiwiyin, also known as Poundmaker, was a Plains Cree chief born in 1842 and remembered as a peacemaker and defender of his people. He worked to protect Cree interests during negotiations with colonists.

In 1885, discontent among Cree and Métis communities led to the North-West Rebellion, a short and unsuccessful uprising against the Canadian government. Although Poundmaker himself promoted peace and did not take up arms, some members of his band joined the conflict.

After the Métis defeat at the Battle of Batoche, Poundmaker was arrested, tried for treason, and sentenced to three years in prison. He insisted he had tried to prevent bloodshed. Due to poor health, he was released after one year, but he died only four months later in 1886 from a lung hemorrhage.

In short: Poundmaker is remembered as a Cree leader who sought peace, but was unjustly punished during a time of rebellion and unrest.
