To describe actions that happened regularly or habitually in the past, use:

✅ would + base verb

Example:

• Treaties would be made, promising that the land would remain within the hands of the native tribes in perpetuity.
• This means treaties were regularly made in the past.

📅 Expressing Specific, Dated Past Actions

For actions that happened once or at a specific time, use:

✅ past simple (preterit)

Example:

• This refers to a specific fact or event in the past.
