Singular Plural Notes / Examples
cat cats Just add -s
dog dogs Just add -s
book books Just add -s
apple apples Just add -s
bus buses Add -es because it ends with s
box boxes Add -es because it ends with x
brush brushes Add -es because it ends with sh
watch watches Add -es because it ends with ch
baby babies Change y → ies if noun ends with a consonant + y
city cities Change y → ies if noun ends with a consonant + y

To remember 

  1. Most nouns just take -s.

  2. Add -es if the word ends in s, x, z, ch, sh.

  3. Change y → ies if there is a consonant before y.

  4. Some nouns are irregular and don’t follow these rules (like man → men, child → children).
