unit 3 seance 6 the trail of tears
The Trail of Tears refers to the forced relocation of the Cherokee people from their ancestral lands in Georgia to present-day Oklahoma in 1838. After gold was discovered in Georgia, white settlers wanted Cherokee land. The U.S. government sent 7,000 soldiers to remove 17,000 Cherokees, many of whom were forced out violently. Most had to walk 1,200 miles in harsh winter conditions with little food or shelter. The journey lasted six months and resulted in the deaths of around 4,000 people due to hunger, exposure, and disease. The Cherokees called it “the trail where they cried,” now known as the Trail of Tears.
seance 7 the masacre at wounded knee
The Massacre at Wounded Knee Creek occurred on December 29, 1890, marking the final major conflict between Native American tribes and the U.S. military. During a period of intense land disputes from 1860 to 1890, treaties with Native tribes were routinely broken as settlers and the government sought more land. After Chief Sitting Bull was killed, many Lakota Sioux joined Chief Big Foot near Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota. When U.S. soldiers surrounded their camp and demanded disarmament, a gun accidentally discharged, triggering indiscriminate gunfire. Around 300 Lakota men, women, and children were killed in the massacre.
