The Hannah was a ship transporting Irish immigrants to Canada during the Great Famine. 
She left Newry, Ireland on 3 April 1849 with a crew of 12 under its captain, Curry Shaw. It was mainly transporting 
agricultural labourers and their families. There were about 180 passengers. The exact number was not confirmed, 
as the ship’s list was lost. 
The Hannah encountered heavy winds, and a quantity of floating ice on 27 April. At 4 am on 29 April, she struck an 
iceberg, which punched a hole in the hull. 
When he found that there was no hope of saving the ship, Shaw ordered the ship's carpenter to shut the exit, 
trapping the passengers below, but another sailor wrenched it open. Shaw and his first and second officers then 
fled in the only lifeboat. 
The remaining crewmen helped the passengers. The ship sank in 40 minutes. Some went down with the Hannah, 
others fell into the water. Some later perished from the cold. In all, 49 people died. 
The ship Nicaragua, appeared the next day and picked up the survivors. 127 people were rescued. They arrived in 
Quebec City around 14 May.
