Indigenous Peoples of Canada

Canada is home to three main groups of Indigenous peoples: First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.

• First Nations are diverse communities spread across the country. They traditionally lived in many regions, from forests to plains, and developed rich cultures, languages, and traditions.
• Inuit live mainly in the Arctic regions of Canada. They are known for their skills in hunting, fishing, and surviving in very cold climates. Inuit culture includes igloos, sled dogs, and a deep respect for the land and sea.
• Métis are people of mixed Indigenous and European ancestry. They developed their own unique culture, language (Michif), and traditions, especially around the fur trade.
• Wendat (Huron-Wendat) were part of the Iroquoian linguistic family. They lived in longhouses near lakes and rivers, grew crops like corn and beans, and were organized into clans. The Wendat valued dreams, had shamans for healing, and elected chiefs through elder women.

Together, these groups represent the foundations of Canada’s history and identity, each contributing unique traditions, knowledge, and resilience that continue to shape the country
