The Past Simple is used to talk about actions that happened and finished in the past.

1. Form (Regular verbs)

Regular verbs end in –ed:

• play → played

• watch → watched

• clean → cleaned

2. Form (Irregular verbs)

Irregular verbs have a special past form:

• go → went

• see → saw

• eat → ate

• have → had

3. Negative form

did not + base verb

• I did not (didn’t) go.

• She didn’t eat.

4. interrogative  form

Did + subject + base verb

• Did you watch the film?

• Did they travel?

5. Use

We use it for:

• Finished past actions
  I visited my grandmother yesterday.

• Past habits (no longer true)
  He played football when he was young.
